St. Martin’s 50th Anniversary Celebration

St. Martin’s Church is 50 years old this year! Built in the 1960s in the prevailing style, and refurbished in 2010, we are celebrating with a Festival Eucharist and a Cream Tea on Saturday 12th July at 4pm. Come along to celebrate. Everyone welcome!

Special commemorative Fine Bone China mugs are also available to purchase – £6 or 2 for £10. All proceeds will go to support the work of the church.

Kirkby gets a new Team Rector

Rev. Jeremy FaganOut with the old, in with the old… Rev. Jeremy Fagan, for the last eight years Team Vicar of St. Martin’s Southdene, and Children’s Chaplain to the whole parish, has been appointed as Team Rector of the Parish of Kirkby, remaining Team Vicar of St. Martin’s, but giving up his role with children and young people.

Jeremy was licensed on the 20th November, by the Rt Rev. Richard Blackburn, Bishop of Warrington, along with Ven. Ricky Panter, Archdeacon of Liverpool in St. Martin’s.

This appointment gives the parish a measure of continuity at a time of big changes elsewhere, with both Rev. Tim Stratford and Rev. Andy Heber leaving Kirkby over the summer. We look forward to welcoming new colleagues as Team Vicars at St. Andrew’s and St. Chad’s.

Tim & Jen

St. Chad's, Kirkby
St. Chad's at sunset

St. Chad’s was full this evening as we gathered to say goodbye and farewell to Tim, Jen and the boys as they leave Kirkby for Leicester. An emotional service included Tim handing over responsibilities, and giving his thanks for the many people who have worked alongside him and supported his ministry in Kirkby, and our thanks to him and Jen for all the work that they’ve done here. Tim has touched the lives of many people here in Kirkby, and will be a tough act to follow.

Thank you both.

There are more pictures up on our Facebook page – go there and ‘like’ us while you’re at it! Tim will be welcomed to the Diocese of Leicester on the 29th September.

St. Martin's Cabbage Patch!

St. Martin's Community Garden

St. Martin’s has been working with Southdene Neighbourhood Network to open the patch of land behind the church as a space for community gardening and allotments. We’ve finally managed to secure the funding from Liverpool Housing Trust and Church Urban Fund, and the land has been transformed into four large allotments and four raised beds. The allotments are being used by a variety of community groups, including Southdene Resource Centre, Kirkby Women’s Health group, Kirkby Network, the University of the Third Age and St. Martin’s.

The name of the garden was decided after a competition among the prospective gardeners from the Southdene Resource Centre, and they came up with St. Martin’s Cabbage Patch!

We are officially opening the garden on Thursday 31st – keep an eye out for home grown vegetables in the coming months, and if you’ve got green fingers, or would like to develop them, then let us know!

Jayne's Ordination

Jayne with Bishop RichardOn Sunday 10th June, Jayne VanDenBerg-Owens will be ordained as a priest in Liverpool Cathedral. This will be an exciting moment in Jayne’s ministry, and the cathedral will be packed for the occasion.

We will be travelling down to the cathedral from Kirkby together, and then in the evening, Jayne will preside for the first time at a service of Holy Communion in St. Martin’s Church, in Southdene, followed by a party to celebrate!

It’s hard to believe that it’s already a year since Jayne came to Kirkby. Although she has been part of our parish life since last summer, she keeps bumping into old friends who she knows from growing up here. We think this makes her feel at home here, rather than making her feel old!

New way to make donations

You can make a donation to both St Chad’s and St. Martin’s by:
http://www.justgiving.com/stchadkirkby for St. Chad’s, or justgiving.com/stmartinssouthdene for St. Martin’s,
or send a text to 70070 and type either: chad99 or stmn64 followed by the amount you want to give between £1 – £10.

This is a great way for friends of St Chad’s and St. Martin’s, who value the churches as icons of Kirkby at its spiritual heart, to support them.

Text giving is managed by Vodaphone and on-line donation are by “Just Giving” – both are highly reputable.  If you give on-line, you can also tick so that “Just Giving” can claim the tax you have already paid on your donation back and pass that on to us too.
