As we start Holy Week with the joy of Palm Sunday when everyone was excited, let’s remember what it’s like to be excited. Maybe you get excited when it’s your birthday or you are going to do something that you have been waiting for. The people in Jerusalem where excited to see Jesus and they celebrated by waving Palm leaves and shouting Hosanna.

Today we are thinking of Jesus and what it is to be excited.

Story

There are three versions of the story today.
For younger children from Youtube – Jesus Enters Jerusalem told by Holy Tales

For older children from Youtube – God’s Story: Palm Sunday

The other is We’re going on a Jesus Hunt – you can act this one out if you want and the story is attached below.

Activities

There are several things you can do together

Go on a walk – when you go out for your daily exercise you can explore and see what you can find. You can collect leaves and twigs and other natural things. When you get home you can lay all the things you have found on a mat or tray. Talk about the things you have found

  • I wonder what different colours can you see?
  • I wonder what do they smell like?
  • I wonder what is the biggest things you found? What is the smallest?
  • I wonder did you find something that feels rough?
  • Did you find something that feels smooth?
  • I wonder what is your favourite that you found? In today’s story, we heard about some people who collected palm leaves and went to see Jesus. Can you remember what they used their leaves for?

Something to make –

Make some hand print palm branches, there are different ways to make them depending on what you have at home.

Step 1 Draw round your hand on green paper ( white if you haven’t got green and you can colour it in)
OR
Using green paint, make green hand prints on paper or card.

Step 2 Cut out your hand shapes to make your leaves. Attach you leaves to a ‘stalk’- if you have a lolly stick, you could attach them to this with sticky tape or glue, or you could use the centre of a kitchen roll or roll a piece of paper into a tube shape and staple your leaves to it.
OR
Stick your leaves onto a piece of card or paper and draw a stalk down the middle.

Then –
Copy what the people did when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem. Collect some coats or towels that you can find (get permission first) and lay them the length of the room in a pathway like the people did for Jesus.

Cross the room from one side to the other walking only on the coats shouting Hosanna and waving the palms you have made and remember how excited the people where to see Jesus.

The people waving were filled with joy. They were happy because Jesus was very special

  • I wonder what makes you feel happy?
  • I wonder who is special to you?
  • I wonder if you could use your palm leaves next Thursday to wave and shout for all the Doctors and Nurses and people who help us?

Write the word ‘Hosanna’ on pieces of paper write it big and write it small, decorate them and make them colourful. Then ask someone to hide them around the house in different places when the message is hidden send everyone else to find them (you can put a time limit on the search). When you are finished you could put them in your window.

Song for everyone This little light of mine

Prayers

Ask an Adult to light a Candle (make sure it not left unsupervised and that it is blown out when you finish the prayers)

Say the Lord’s Prayer together.
For younger children The Lord’s Prayer

Put your hand out in front of you with your palm facing upwards and trace the listen to these words.

God, thank you for all the things that make us feel happy (draw a smiling face).

Thank you for all the people who are special to us. (write their name in your palm)

Help us to remember that Jesus is special too, and we are special to him. (draw a heart on your palm).

Amen (jump up as high as you can and say ‘Amen’ together!)

Don’t forget the puzzle sheets!
